Harry Lerner of Lerner Publishing to speak at September 14th meeting.
Mr. Lerner has headed Lerner Publications for more than 50 years. The company, started in Minneapolis, began with four titles published primarily for children to read at doctor's offices to comfort them about common childhood illnesses (some of which have been nearly eliminated thanks to vaccines) Right away, schools and libraries proved to be the better customer group for this company! Today, Lerner Publishing Group is one of the largest independently owned publishers of books for chldren and teens in North America, releasing 300-plus titles each year and employing more than 200 people.
Mr. Lerner has been a supporter of MLA, sponsoring the Sharon Lerner Lecture the past few years and paying a Lerner shcolarship for several staff to attend MLA Conference every year. He was also an early member of the MLA Foundation Board and his son has succeeded him on the Board.
A STICK IN THE MUD was the title of Allan Kornblum's presentation at our September 21, 2009 meeting. Mr. Kornblum took us through the process of the printed word starting with clay tablets up to and including the Kindle. Mr.Kornblum is founder and current president of Coffee House Press (CHP).
